According to a well educated guy we searched for all weekend long, government secrecy endangers the public. This well educated guy teaches at Kent State University. He is, what most would consider, a "government expert." Or at least for the purposes of backing us up on our decision to publish the concealed carry lists for Erie, Ottawa and Sandusky County. He was willing to lump the secret nature of Ohio's concealed carry license application process in with all other "secret government activity" so we could capitalize on the public's disdain for "government secrecy."
"You can't automatically rely on government officials to carefully follow the requirements of the law," said the well educated guy, referring to the concealed weapons law.
The CCW law exempts the disclosure of all information about the application process and criminal backgrounds of anyone who applies for license to carry a concealed handgun. It also exempts the names of those who have been granted a permit.
"If the records are private, I have to rely on the sheriff to make sure he's not making any mistakes," the well educated guy said. Trusting elected officials to do their jobs would certainly be counter to good government."
We at the Regurgitator certainly agree with the well educated guy. Even though the CCW application process has been administered legally, with background checks, and hands on training tests, we must be paranoid and suspicious of any gun nut who would be willing to jump through legal hoops to carry a firearm.
And rest assured that when we are able to unearth a single example of how the CCW application process doesn't work, (we're working on that as I write this) in order to retroactively support our dubious decision to publish the CCW lists, we'll make it front page news.
